For more than thirty years, I have run tabletop roleplaying games, and today I work as a professional, paid game master, and part time adult. I runs Call of Cthulhu, Dungeons & Dragons, Rune Quest, and Vampire: The Masquerade for groups of experienced players and first-timers alike. Few forms of storytelling are as unforgiving. A game master builds mystery, pacing, and dread in real time, in front of a live audience who will tell him immediately when a scene falls flat, and who will laugh at the worst possible moment if I let them. Three decades of that work are the foundation of my novel's structure: clues that pay off, horror that escalates, and humor timed to release tension without breaking it.
